Miles Coverdale Primary School

Welcome to Year 1!

Transition from Reception to Year 1

Our aim is to ensure that the children experience a smooth transition from the Foundation Stage to Key Stage One. The Year 1 curriculum builds upon and extends the experiences that children have had in Reception. Learning through play will continue to be an important part of the school day, and the children will gradually be eased into more formal learning as the year goes on so that they remain motivated, enthused and eager learners. Please don’t hesitate to come and see the class teacher either before or after school if you have any questions or queries.

Reading in Year 1

Your child will be given a different book along with a reading record every night. They will need to bring their books and records to school every day so that we can change them. Please do comment on how you think your child is doing and let me know if you think their book is too easy or too hard and I will hear them read in school and change it as necessary The children will also have lots of opportunities to read and enjoy books throughout the week at school and at home.

Star of the day

Every day I will choose a child to be star of the day. They will receive a gold star and their picture will go up on our star board for the whole of the next day. A child will earn their gold star by being kind to all their teachers and friends, trying hard in all their work and tidying up as soon as I give them instructions. Please encourage your child to follow these rules and hopefully they will be bringing home lots of gold stars for you to stick on your fridge!

The children will be doing PE on Fridays. Please ensure your child has their PE kit in school and that all items are clearly labelled. We encourage children to practise getting dressed at home to help them get changed quickly in school! Swimming will not be starting until after the February half term.

Please ensure your child is in the playground at 8:50 every morning. It is vital that your child is on time so that they are ready to start learning at 9:00. Similarly, please make sure that you are bringing your child to school every day. If you know that your child is unwell and will not be coming in please call the office and leave a message.
