Miles Coverdale Primary School

Welcome to Year 5!

Topics for Learning
Year 5 will be doing Reading Groups from 9 – 9.30am each morning. We will be writing recounts and narravitives in our English lessons and will focus on using correct punctuation and handwriting. In Science, we will be investigating healthy living. During Mathematics, we will focus on counting, 3D shapes, number facts and addition calculations. Year 5 will be studying Black History this half-term and will participate in the School’s Black History event in October.

Homework and Home Reading
Your child will take their homework in a book each Friday. It is to be completed and returned by the following Wednesday for checking.
Children in Year 5 need to read every day as an integral part of their home study routine. Books borrowed from the classroom should travel in a bookbag for safekeeping. If your child requires a new bookbag, they are available from the school office for £5.00 Please return all books to the classroom for changing as soon as they are finished.

P.E.
We have Physical Education lessons each Wednesday and FridayChildren will need to bring their P.E. kits both days. P.E. kits should contain shorts or loose, comfortable tracksuit trousers, a t-shirt, socks and lace-up trainers. They may need a jumper in cooler weather.
We are hoping to invite some specialist sports coaches to work with our class throughout the year and children may need P.E. kits on additional days. If so, the children will be informed in advance.

Swimming
Year 5 have swimming lessons on Monday. Please ensure your child has a swimming bag containing a swimming costume, bathing cap (these are essential) and any other necessary equipment, such as goggles, every Monday.

If you would like to arrange a meeting to discuss your child, please do not hesitate to contact me to make an appointment for a convenient time. I thank you for your support and am greatly looking forward to a happy and productive year with your child.
