School Council
The School Council serves as a democratically elected body and a voice for the children in our school.
What is the School Council?
The School Council is a group of children who meet regularly to discuss issues within the school. There are two Children elected as School Councillors in each class from Years 2-6.
Why do we have a Children’s School Council?
- To improve the school according to the children's point of view.
- To make sure our school works harmoniously as a community.
- To enable children to voice their concerns and act upon them.
Elections
Candidates have to deliver a speech and give reasons as to why they are the best candidates to represent their class. Classes vote for a boy and girl representative. This system of elections is held every year with an opportunity for new members to run for a position.
Our School Council should give pupils the experience of:
- Planning, organising and monitoring small projects
- Speaking and listening skills
- Debating skills
- Mediation and negotiating skills
- Basic budgeting and managing money
Our School Council aims to prepare our pupils for citizenship by teaching them about roles, rights and responsibilities within the school system.
Meetings
Children learn how a meeting runs and how a Council can be effective. They elect a leadership team to guide and direct meetings, the agenda and aims throughout the coming year. This leadership consists of Chair, Vice Chair and Secretary.
Minutes are recorded by the secretary and the children take their roles very seriously.
Examples of Projects
Save the children – Every year Miles Coverdale Primary school raises money for charity. Last year, the school council team came up with a list of charities they wanted to raise money for. We involved the whole school by asking each class to vote for one charity they wanted to see their money go to. The charity Save the children received the most votes overall. Over the Christmas period, we raised money by holding a Christmas jumper day. The money raised was given to Save the Children to train community health care workers to help children grow up healthy and safe. Thank you for the generosity of families at Miles Coverdale!
Empties Please- School Council members have chosen a recycling scheme to help the environment. We are working with a company called ‘Empties Please’. They collect and recycle used ink cartridges the environmentally friendly way and will donate the money raised back to us. We ask parents and school staff members to collect used ink cartridges and put them in our recycle bin. We collect ink cartridges from absolutely anywhere; school, work, home, clubs, friends and family and keep bringing them to school any time throughout the year.
